Since the Research Triangle area is one of the most educated metros in the country, it's no surprise that there's trivia everywhere you go. Just remember, you're competing against some of the best, especially when you're close to the brain magnet of Duke.
Every Tuesday at 9:30 in the dimly lit James Joyce Irish Pub, a 6-round, 5-question per round trivia contest takes place covering a wide variety of categories. The prize? A substantial bar tab and an excuse to call in sick on Wednesday.
The place is usually packed, so we recommend getting there early for a few warm up drinks or a meal. Occasionally different brewery/beer representatives will show up for the crowd and give away prizes in-between the 6 rounds.
The whole affair makes for a great weeknight escape.
About James Joyce Irish Pub and Restaurant:
Established in 1998, James Joyce offers an Irish pub experience with food and drink from both sides of the Atlantic, as well as other European traditions like "footie" (soccer) viewing parties. With lighting on the dim side, Irish and James Joyce themed memorabilia on the walls, and "Irish castles" posters in the restrooms, they definitely pull off an authentic pub vibe without being cliche.
The actual inside bar area is fairly small (one's "cozy" is another's "cramped"), but JJ is nicely outfitted with both front and back patios for crisp outdoor drinks in the spring or fall. With a laid-back and mature atmosphere, expect a crowd of young-to-middle-aged professionals, sprinkled with a few old-soul college students.
